CI = Cochlear Implant. Picture a hearing aid that goes inside yer head and bypasses your broken ear parts.

What do you see an ear doctor for?

I have degenerative hearing loss from nerve damage in my left ear due to illness and damage when I was little. It's not too bad, but I have to have tests every year to check the progression. So, I have trouble hearing on that side. Sometimes people think I'm being funny when I ask them to speak into "my good side", but then I explain :)

Nope. I do my own sort of lip-reading though. My right ear is perfectly fine and the hearing loss in my left has been stable since high school, so it's not a huge problem. I can't, for example, talk on the phone on that side and in noisy environments I have trouble hearing people to my left. Stuff like that. But, it's not a 100% loss in that ear, I can still hear on that side but just not very well. You read lips, yes?

Yeah, I read lips extremely well. I basically can't use the phone anymore, except for people that I know well. I hate places with lots of background noise, but other than that, I can usually pick up somebody's speech nuances quickly.
