09:15 am - Stolen from Bash, but so true...
A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you're a great guy, but I don't like you in that way. This is roughly the equivalent for the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but we're not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the basis for comparison for all other applicants. But, we're going to hire somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if he doesn't work out, we'll hire somebody else, but still not you. In fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to complain about the person that we hired.

Guys are stupid, but not completely oblivious. I think most guys know when they have been categorized as "friends-only" material, and so wisely decide to save themselves the embarrassment of making a move. We're too stupid to just give it up totally though, so we soldier on in friend mode hoping that someday she'll see our inner beauty or whatever the fuck it is that makes girls go squee.

Also, there are degrees. I don't think every guy rabidly lusts after every girl he's friends with. But to some degree or another it's usually true.

Squee is a good word. I'm glad you introduced me to it.

Backup emergency poontang. In case of emergency, break glass.*

*Where "Glass" means existing platonic friendship.

Can they? I can only speak to the male psyche, but I'd bet in any friendship one of the first things they work out is whether or not they'd ever get involved, and to what extend and what circumstances.

Have you ever done that?

But essentially you did categorize upon meeting. You just categorized that person as "unavailable".

Why a bad representative?

Like PPA said, most guys know the category they've been put into by their women friends. [datable or not] Sometimes the category changes. Sadly, it is usually something silly like guy becomes wealthy, or guy spends a lot of time working out and goes from flabby to buff. Don't get me wrong, this goes for both genders.

Plus, there are fringe benefits. Social events with both genders are more easily navigated if you've got friends on both sides.

You can take (almost) this complete scenario and gender reverse it. Guys do this to women as well. I know from personal experience and have written about it in some cases (and have NOT written about it in others). I say "almost" because most guys wouldn't call and bitch to me about the girl their seeing.

ohhh, I've had guys griping to me about their girls. when they *know* i'm interested, too. once in the same conversation, even - I told him the extent and nature of my interest, and 15 minutes later he's complaining about his woman. but he's not interested in me like that, nope.

I said they wouldn't bitch to me, not that it doesn't happen to others. although you did remind me of a similar situation 2 summers ago with a guy i was interested in. she "left him for another man" and he was an absolute wreck. he knew there was an interest from me and i even hinted it at it then. all i was ever good to him for was a "happy ending", but never anything more than that.

yup... what's worse? you being only good for a happy ending or only good as a friend? i think their pretty much on par with one another.

Re: Caveman + Sensitive Guy = Dream Boat.

I think they don't apply, but only when they don't think there's a reasoanble chance of success. (or they're very shy).

From now on, I'll be grabbing asses at first sight! Thanks for the advice!

Here is the way I look at it. Typically, the girl IS interested in the guy, but certain situations prohibit her from dating him -- be it that she has a boy friend, no one likes him, or she doesn't find him as mentally attractive as she does physically attractive. (and vice versa) Chances are, there is "chemistry" but not enough to ruin a friendship.

I have to admit though -- I wasn't interested in my beau until I said hello to him and he said: Don't talk to me. After I chased him down, he ended up being a really, really sensitive, nurturing guy. And we've been dating for 8 months now.

Interesting post though, and I can see where it would sure seem like that. haha.

Oh, hi. I'm jane.
