Not seeing any first-hand accounts, I'll give my opinion as someone who grew up about 100 miles east of there.... My impression of Alexandria is a very chi-chi near-in suburb of DC. They've worked hard to keep the Old Town section feeling old; to me it feels a bit like Newbury St. There are lots of good places to shop and eat, and I've heard it's good for a night out. My other impression is that there are also lots of big box apartment complexes in the area too.

Opinion-wise, it's not my kind of thing -- it feels very yuppy / SUV / Gucci to me. For me, the best thing about Alexandria is the metro line up into the rest of DC. Now, as far as a base to stay for visiting DC, it's pretty good.

I know a handful of people who live in that area, and I agree with the comment about huge apartment complexes. That was my impression of the place as well... like it exists as a place for people to sleep who all know that the action is really elsewhere. I don't think I've been to the Old Town section of it though, so I can't speak for that part.
